At the Baxter Fall Festival I happened to stumble upon a booth entitled “Love for Libby”. They were selling lovely T-shirts to benefit a young girl in their neighborhood. A great cause, for sure, then I heard a little more about Libby. Libby is a 2 year old girl who is currently undergoing Chemotherapy in order to stabilize an inoperable brain tumor behind one of her eyes. The friends and supporters of her couragous family that were there working the booth told me that the money raised would go to help pay her medical bills. Immediatley I thought, “where do I sign up to help.” Having four kids of my own, I was particularly drawn to this story. I needed to help with a donation and by spreading the word about this cause.
After speaking breifly with Libby’s mother, I saw a flyer for an event at Beef O’Brady’s on November 21st. The flyer had a picture of Ron Burgandy from Anchorman (a hilarious film), and the quote, “Keep it classy, grow a stachey”. I quickly put two and two together and picked up the flyer knowing that I would be having my husband participate in this event. He will finally be able to grow that handle bar mustache with good cause. I went home and immediately got in contact with the event’s organizer, Shawn Lydon.
I asked Shawn about the event and why he got involved. His answers were heartwarming to say the least. Shawn said, ”Funny enough, I personally did not meet Libby until after I started planning the event. A coworker of mine, Lynn Reyes, told me about her and asked if I could help. The event is not an original idea, as M4K (mustache for kids) has been doing similar fundraisers in other cities for a few years now. I’ve always wanted to do one of these, and when I heard about Libby and {knowing}my own limited availability, it was a perfect fit.”
Stache Bash 2011 will begin at 7:00 PM at Beef O’Brady’s in Baxter village on November 21. Those interested in participating should e-mail Shawn Lydon (slrb8020@yahoo.com) with their name, phone number and e-mail address before the event.
Growers will be challenged to raise $500 a piece between the start of the event on November 21 to the end of the event on December 19th. I urge everyone within the Fort Mill Community to pledge any amount to any person participating in this event. No amount is too small (or too large for that matter!).
Again, if you want to participate (and I DOUBLE DOG DARE you to), please e-mail Shawn today with your information.
Keep it classy, grow a stachey!!
